Unique Like Leo, in audio for the FABA storyteller
Unique Like Leo is a FABA sound character: a figure the child places on the speaker that starts the story automatically. No screen, no buttons and no adult needed to press play — which is exactly what hooks little ones and gives them independence.
A story about being different (and being fine with it)
There’s no wolf and no castle here: the conflict is an inner one. Leo doesn’t quite fit in, compares himself to everyone else, feels odd, and ends up discovering that the very thing that made him different is what makes him valuable. It’s a story about values — self-esteem, identity and acceptance — and it lands well from about age 3, when children start noticing the group and wondering whether they are “like the others”.
In households with children who have additional needs (speech and language, autism, ADHD, motor difficulties) it’s a particularly comfortable story: it talks about feeling different without labels and without turning difference into a problem. The child recognises themselves in Leo without feeling the story is “about their diagnosis”. And with siblings and classmates it opens the door to talking about inclusion naturally.
What it works on
- Self-esteem and identity: recognizing yourself, naming what you’re good at.
- Active listening and sustained auditory attention, with no visual support.
- Narrative language: characters, sequence, retelling in their own words..
- Vocabulary for feelings and getting along (different, similar, friend, help).
- Independence: the child places and removes it themselves
How to use it at home, in class or in the clinic
After listening to it, these three questions open up a lot of possibilities : what made Leo feel different? what makes you unique? What would you say to someone who feels left out? Speech-language therapists use it for retelling and internal-state vocabulary; early years teachers use it at circle time; and families simply use it to open a conversation that’s hard to start head-on.
How does it work?
Just place the character on the FABA storyteller, and the audio starts playing. This character doesn’t work on its own: it needs the FABA speaker, which plays the audio. If the child is listening at home with other people, the Dudun children’s headphones with an 85 dB limit work great—they protect the child’s hearing without you having to keep an eye on the volume.
