Discovering Emotions is a FABA sound character: a figure the child places on the speaker that starts the story automatically. No screen, no buttons and no adult needed to press play — which is exactly what hooks little ones and gives them independence.

Putting a name to the feeling: joy, sadness, anger and fear

The point of the story isn’t “behaving nicely”: it’s for the child to identify and name what is going on inside. Each emotion turns up attached to a concrete situation and a bodily reaction (the knot in the tummy that comes with fear, the heat of anger, the urge to jump about with joy) — precisely the scaffolding a three- to six-year-old needs to move from “I feel bad” to “I’m cross because…”That shift, from vague sensation to word, is the first genuine step towards emotional regulationwhat you can name, you can begin to manage.

The great advantage of the audio format is that you can pause it. Stopping the story just as a character gets angry and asking , “How do you think they feel?” or “Has that ever happened to you?” turns listening into a conversation. And since there’s no single image that explains everything, the child has to construct the emotion through language, rather than just recognizing a drawn face.

Audio, not hands-on material: how it differs

How to use it at home, in class or in the clinic

In a calm corner it works beautifully as a way down from a peak: the child steps away, listens and comes back. In social skills sessions it gives everyone a shared script for talking about conflict without singling anyone out. Speech and language therapists use it for internal-state vocabulary and retelling; early years teachers use it at circle time; and families use it after a meltdown, once talking is possible again.

How does it work?

Just place the character on the FABA storyteller, and the audio starts playing. This character doesn’t work on its own: it needs the FABA speaker, which plays the content. If the child is listening at home with other people, or in the quiet corner of the classroom, the Dudun kids’ headphones with an 85 dB limit work very well—they protect the child’s hearing without requiring you to constantly monitor the volume.
