Orofacial aesthetics works on the same things as the rest of myofunctional therapy — tone, symmetry, mobility — while also looking at the visible result: expression, lip contour, facial balance.

It is not a separate discipline. It is the same muscle, assessed and trained with the same criteria, using tools designed for surface work.

Thermotherapy. Cold and heat prepare the tissue before exercise and settle it afterwards. This is where the Cool Roller and its tips, the thermal roller, orofacial cooling strips, instant cold packs and the animal-shaped hot/cold cushions live.

Active toning. Facial and tongue exercisers, Lip Gym labial weights, lip tonifier and ProBarbell: graded resistance for working closure and tone.

Instrumental stimulation. Mini vibrating facial stimulators, roller massagers, extraoral electrode face masks and paediatric mini electrodes.

Recording. Dermographic pencils and calipers let you mark and measure on the skin, which is what turns an impression into data.

Preparatory vibration is in vibration; the full instrumental technique in electrostimulation; and the lip and tongue work that holds the result in lips, tongue and more.

What orofacial aesthetics covers

It is myofunctional therapy applied to facial balance. It starts from a simple idea: the face you see from outside is, to a large extent, the result of how the musculature works inside.

A hypotonic upper lip that does not seal leaves the mouth slightly open and changes the resting position. Chewing always on the same side develops one masseter more than the other. Years of mouth breathing change the lower third of the face.

Working that musculature improves function — and with it, what you see changes. Order matters: function first, aesthetic result second. The other way round does not work.

Cold and heat: when to use which

Cold

Lowers activity and reduces inflammation. Used after intense exercise, in post-surgical processes and where there is hypertonia or pain.

Heat

Increases flow and prepares the tissue. Used before exercise, on cold or stiff musculature, and in scar work.

Contrast

Alternating cold and heat mobilises tissue and is used in oedema and post-surgical rehabilitation. It requires judgement: it is not indicated in every condition.

Tone work with measurable resistance

Labial weights and tonifiers are not accessories: they are calibrated resistance. As elsewhere in the body, facial muscle responds to progressive load.

The key is recording. Marking reference points with a dermographic pencil and measuring them with calipers lets you come back six weeks later and compare under the same conditions.

Common questions

Is this the same as cosmetic facial treatment?

No. Cosmetic treatment works on the skin from the outside. Orofacial aesthetics works on muscle function, and the visible change is a consequence.

Is it used for facial palsy?

It is one of its main applications. Symmetry work, stimulation and thermotherapy are part of the usual approach, always within a plan and taking the stage of the palsy into account.
