Dice, rhymes, and fun for learning language through play
Some games are just for fun… while others also help develop key skills as kids play. Átomo’s “Escuela de monstruos” falls into the second category: a simple, fast-paced, and highly engaging game that hooks players from the very first round thanks to its dice, challenges, and touch of rhymes.
It’s a children’s board game where the goal is to score 8 “monstrous” points by completing cards through dice rolls and overcoming simple language challenges. On each turn, players roll the dice, trying to match the monsters shown on one of the face-up cards. If needed, they can reroll some of the dice once, which adds a simple, accessible element of strategy.
But there’s one thing that sets it apart: when you draw a card, you don’t just earn points… you also have to complete a rhyme, which adds a fun element that’s very helpful for language development.
It allows you to develop various skills in a natural way:
It promotes visual attention, since players must quickly identify the monsters on the cards; decision-making, as they choose whether to roll the dice again; and language and creativity, thanks to the rhymes. It also encourages planning and impulse control, since it isn’t always a good idea to roll the dice again.
How do you play?
The game is very easy to set up. Several cards are placed face up, and on each turn, the player rolls the dice, trying to get the combination of monsters shown on one of those cards. The player can choose to reroll some of the dice once to improve their result. If they manage to complete a card, they win it, score the points shown, and must finish the rhyme that appears on it. This dynamic ensures that everyone participates, stays engaged, and enjoys both the game and the language.
