Eating is the most complete oral exercise a baby does every single day. That is why feeding equipment is not neutral: the rim of a cup, the depth of a spoon or the shape of a plate change how the tongue and lips work. Here it is sorted by stage and by need.

It is part of Baby World.

What to look for at each stage

Breastfeeding and the first months. Everything runs through sucking. What you buy here supports the mother and the baby more than the food itself.

Starting solids, around 6 months. This is where the choice between purées and baby-led weaning appears. If the baby feeds themselves, you need equipment that survives being grabbed, squashed and thrown: suction plates and pieces that will not break.

The cup, around twelve months. This is the most significant change for the mouth. Moving from sucking to sipping stops the tongue pushing forward, which is exactly what we want. A thin-rimmed cup helps; a hard spout delays it.

Their own cutlery, between one and two. Thick, short handles, and a shallow spoon bowl so the food does not fall off before it arrives.

Baby-led weaning or purées?

It is not a moral choice and there is no single answer: it depends on the baby, on the family, and on what your paediatrician advises. What is true is that chewing pieces trains the musculature differently from swallowing purée, and that plenty of babies do both at once without any trouble.

What if my child refuses textures or gags on almost everything?

That is no longer solved with tableware. The right category is swallowing and feeding, within orofacial myology, and it is worth having a speech therapist assess it.
