The Gruffalo, in audio for the FABA storyteller

The Gruffalo as a FABA sound character: a figure the child places on the speaker that starts the story automatically. No screen, no buttons and no adult needed to press play — which is exactly what hooks little ones and gives them independence.

A tale in verse: why it works so well for language

The Gruffalo isn’t just any story: it’s written in verse, with rhymes and a very distinct rhythm. This makes it an excellent tool for developing phonological awareness (identifying and playing with final sounds, syllables, and rhyming pairs) and auditory memory: children begin to anticipate the rhyming word before it’s spoken, and end up reciting entire passages from memory.

What’s more, the plot is a treat for listening comprehension: a clever little mouse invents a monster to scare off those who want to eat him… until the monster actually appears. That twist compels readers to follow the story, understand the characters’ intentions, and distinguish between what’s real and what’s made up. And along the way, it introduces vocabulary related to forest animals (mouse, fox, owl, snake) and physical descriptions that are very easy to reuse later on.

What it works on

  • Phonological awareness: rhyme, rhythm, and playing with sounds.
  • Auditory memory and anticipation: repeating and anticipating the next line.
  • Listening Comprehension: the characters’ intentions, humor, trickery, and wit.
  • Vocabulary related to forest animals and physical descriptions.
  • Independence: the child puts it on and takes it off by themselves.

How does it work?

Just place the character on the FABA storyteller, and the audio starts playing. This character doesn’t work on its own: it needs the FABA speaker, which plays the audio. If the child is listening at home with other people, the Dudun kids’ headphones with an 85 dB limit work very well.
