The Lion King is a coming-of-age story: a cub who runs away, hides from what happened and eventually returns to take his place. Along the way it tackles something few children’s stories face head-on: loss and the circle of life. That makes it one of the most useful stories in the range for talking about grief, guilt and responsibility with children, without forcing it — you listen first, then talk about what each of you understood.
From a purely linguistic standpoint, it has another huge strength: its characters are very recognizable by their voices. Simba, Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Scar—each has a distinct register, tone, and rhythm. This turns the audio into a natural exercise in identifying characters solely by their voices (“Who’s speaking now?”)—a form of auditory discrimination that’s a lot of fun.
