How to get a baby gift right

• Think about the age they'll be, not the age they are. A newborn gift gets enjoyed at six months. Going one stage ahead beats falling short.
• Avoid what they already have by the dozen. Newborn-size clothes and generic soft toys are what duplicate most at any birth.
• Washable and hard-wearing. Everything that reaches a baby ends up in the mouth and on the floor, in that order.
• Good, safe materials. Properly finished wood, food-grade silicone, fabrics with no small parts. That's what makes a gift get kept for the next sibling.
• Think about the adult too. A photo album, a keepsake box or anything personalisable carries a value a toy doesn't.

Ideas by occasion

New baby. Gift boxes with several coordinated pieces, a comforter, a nice-to-touch rattle, a photo album. They work because they cover the "I don't know what's missing" and arrive well presented.

First birthday. There are preferences by now: manipulation material, stackers, a pounding bench or something musical. This is the age when a well-chosen toy gets months of use.

Christening or naming day. People want something that lasts and gets kept: wooden pieces, keepsake boxes, albums.

A gift for the family that has everything. This is where the unusual items win.
