Two things happen between six and twelve months that change everything: the hand starts grasping precisely and the body starts moving. Suddenly the baby can reach what they want and take it, and a toy stops being something offered to them and becomes something they choose.

The in-and-out obsession
Around nine months a game appears that looks trivial and is among the most important of the first year: putting something into a container and taking it out again. Forty times. With the same concentrated expression every time.
What they are building is object permanence: understanding that things continue to exist when out of sight. It is the same reason peekaboo is so funny to them, and it is an enormous conceptual leap disguised as repetitive play.

From whole hand to pincer grip
At six months they grasp with the whole hand, like a rake. Around nine or ten the inferior pincer appears, thumb against the side of the index finger, and near the first birthday the superior pincer, fingertip to fingertip, which lets them pick up a crumb.
That sequence cannot be accelerated by buying things, but it can be supported: objects of varying sizes, things to pinch, narrow-mouthed containers. And food, which is the best fine motor material there is and costs nothing.
It will all end up in the mouth, and that shapes what you buy
Even with the hand working, the mouth remains the verification tool. Anything you give them has to be designed to end up bitten.
Two practical criteria: no piece that fits entirely inside a toilet roll tube — the classic choking rule — and materials that withstand saliva without degrading. Food-grade silicone and solid wood qualify; card and thin plastic do not.
