Advancing the EBP Valuing with POAS
The POAS is a surgical steel instrument 14 cm long and 10 cm wide, it is bent at a 90° angle so that one side is 6 cm and the other 8 cm, both sides are millimetered with 10 x 10 mm squares and, in addition, it has recording sheets. This plate, in its first version, was used by Barreto in a research with the purpose of diagnosing children with and without the presence of oral respiration. Subsequently, in 2013, Susanibar adapted the plate making some modifications in order to increase the efficiency of the instrument and, in 2019, new adaptations were made, resulting in the Oronasal Plate Adapted by Susanibar – POAS.
Evaluating and diagnosing an alteration in the respiratory mode has always been a challenge for various specialties, including speech therapy, because the diagnosis must be based on a series of indicators and symptoms. Therefore, tools that contribute to the correct diagnosis of this disorder are necessary. In this sense, among the instruments that can contribute to meet this objective are: the protocol of phonoaudiological evaluation of breathing with score – PEFORP and the Oronasal Plate Adapted by Susanibar – POAS, the latter instrument, with its characteristic of 90º plate can assess nasal permeability and the possible participation of the oral cavity in breathing at the same time, in this way more objective data will be obtained to make a relevant diagnosis.
