Podría decirse que para que el sordo pueda acceder al uso -e incluso al dominio- de la lengua de los oyentes, es preciso adentrarse antes en su propio lenguaje, en su gramática, sintaxis y léxico, para desde ahí trasvasar la comprensión hacia el lenguaje oral y de éste hacia la lengua de los signos.
Mil palabras con las manos no es un diccionario, ni una relación más o menos exhaustiva de signos o señales de la lengua de los sordos, ni un traductor simultáneo. Es un intento de plantear globalmente la solución o un camino hacia soluciones en la polémica -tantas veces estéril- del oralismo y la utilización de la mímica como únicos y excluyentes procedimientos pedagógicos en la educación de los sordos.Es también una reflexión de mayor alcance sobre los derechos y el desarrollo personal, social y colectivo de una parte de nuestros conciudadanos que nacieron privados de la audición o la perdieron posteriormente. Por tanto, mil palabras con las manos no es un libro solamente para profesores de sordos, ni un vademecum para traductores improvisados.
